An­ti-fog and de-ic­ing coat­ings en­sure max­i­mum vis­i­bil­i­ty for the pi­lot un­der all en­vi­ron­men­tal con­di­tions and at all op­er­at­ing al­ti­tudes, guar­an­tee­ing safe­ty and mis­sion suc­cess.

In ad­di­tion, IR-shad­ing, UV-pro­tec­tion, and sun-pro­tec­tion coat­ings in­crease com­fort for both pi­lots and pas­sen­gers in the cab­in by re­flect­ing cer­tain wave­lengths of so­lar ra­di­a­tion and al­low­ing on­ly vis­i­ble light to pass through these lay­er stacks.

In some air­planes, com­fort is fur­ther in­creased by elec­tro­chrom­ic, dim­ma­ble cab­in win­dows, elim­i­nat­ing the need for win­dow shades.

In view of electro­magnetic threats and the dis­rup­tion of air traf­fic through elec­tro­mag­net­ic waves and la­sers, safe­guard­ing cock­pit elec­tron­ics has be­come an im­por­tant ap­pli­ca­tion for func­tion­al coat­ings on avi­a­tion trans­par­en­cies.
