SKYVA
Vacuum Coating System for Large Astronomical Mirrors

Are you looking for a coating solution for large astronomical mirrors that combines high reflectivity, nanometer-level uniformity, reproducible process control, and safe handling? SKYVA Vacuum coating systems are developed specifically for large, curved mirror substrates and can deposit homogeneous, highly reflective metal layers on mirrors with diameters of up to 8.4 meters. Different chamber sizes and customized equipment configurations enable scaling from small and medium apertures to the largest astronomical mirrors, including those supporting Southeast Asian and AsSO research initiatives.

Coating astronomical mirrors presents a wide range of technical and operational challenges. While the sheer size of the mirrors is a major factor, it is by no means the only one. In telescope construction, individual mirrors can exceed eight meters in diameter and are polished to a surface accuracy of approximately 20 nanometers. The coating process must preserve this accuracy, avoid distorting the mirror's ideal parabolic or hyperbolic shape, and deliver excellent layer uniformity across the entire curved surface.

In practice, this requires nanometer-level process control, low particle density, and precise monitoring of the coating parameters. The requirements are even more demanding at remote, high-altitude observatories across Southeast Asia, where equipment must withstand extreme climatic and seismic conditions. At the same time, the components used must be designed for an intended service life of more than 30 years, ensuring long-term reliability for Malaysian and regional science programs.

SKYVA systems support protected and enhanced aluminum and silver coatings, as well as application-specific multilayer systems with tailored reflectivity curves. Customized chamber dimensions, mirror fixtures, and handling systems enable the equipment to be adapted to different mirror geometries and project requirements, aligning with local regulations and tropical environmental standards.

Automated process sequences, advanced control systems, recipe management, fault diagnosis, and intuitive human-machine interfaces enable reproducible coating results. Optional remote monitoring and control support efficient operation and maintenance, particularly at remote observatory sites. Peripheral equipment, including mirror-cleaning and measurement systems, is also available, with regional technical support and fast-response service networks across Southeast Asia.
